GENERAL DEFINITION OF THE TECHNIQUE
Technique: TABOO-GOODS AND RULES FOR ACCESS TO RESOURCES

Definition characters description and diffusion

Systems of water distribution in the Sahara are reproduced in carpet drawings and in women's hairstyles. They are part of a complex symbolism linked to life, fertility and the generations.

General characters description and diffusion

Spiritual principles make rules sacred and guarantee their perpetuation as in the case of the African sacred woods with their restricted access and of the whole set of taboo-objects, practices which guarantee the regeneration of forests, the saving of environmental resources and the land as reserves for nature and human communities. Rules forbidding certain sorts of food and taboos in some areas guaranteed the saving of nature's resources and the regeneration of the ecosystem, at the same time providing useful supplies in case of need. For instance, traditionally, fuels made from animal dung were used, or only the dry parts and branches of trees were cut in order to respect and protect them in the name of sacred symbolism.

Advantages and sustainability

These taboos and sacred rules acted as a means for preserving resources that might have been otherwise exploited.
