Brief introduction
In 1982, before the realization of the Italipù artificial reservoir, on the Bazil-Paragiay border, some native families belonging to the Avà-Guarani culture were relocated and given technical and financial aids. Following various negotiations between Itaipù Binational (hydroelectric dam) and Funai (National Foundation for Indians), the latter bought an area of 242 hectares to be allocated to these families. The area was consigned in February 2007 for the formation of a new village called Itamara, which in Guarani means "diamond”. At present there are three villages in the area (Itamar, Ocoy, Dill), for a total of 2236 inhabitants.

Solutions/Project description
The project “Programa Socioambiental de ITAIPU Bionacional y Socios “ is sponsored by Itaipù with the aim of improving the infrastructures of the villages, in order that they achieve autonomy, strengthen their ethnic identity and cultural heritage, and for the enhancement of local traditions.
Activities:
- Upgrading the road system, construction of houses nd chapels, installation of domestic electricity grid and water supply network.
- construction of crafts centres, organization of courses, promotion of music and dance
- expansion of agricultural areas
- distribution of materials, animals and seeds
- encourage the formation of cooperatives
- promotion of fishery industry
- distribution of food, in case of need, and infant nutrition educational programs
The implementation of this project is done by a committee (Comité Gestor), made of representatives of indigenous communities, neighbouring villages, Funai, Funasa, IAP, IBAMA, and other foundations.
Conclusions
Results achieved so far: 60 houses built and 45 under construction, 120 fences, 40 water tanks, 800 medicinal plants planted. Annual Agricultural production totals: 136T corn, watermelons 27t, 17t of pumpkins, 227 tonnes of mandioca (manioc, an edible root).
