GENERAL DEFINITION OF THE TECHNIQUE
Technique: FORMS OF SOCIAL SOLIDARITY

Definition characters description and diffusion

The close link between actions and nature's harmony imposes a set of prohibitions, restraints and precepts since even the simplest action can contribute to the maintenance of universal balance. Thus, in the oasis the constant relationship between the microcosm and the macrocosm is not a metaphysical conceit but rather an ethical principle based on precise material needs. The social organization is composed of self-governed communities based on the use of the rare means locally available that are ruled by family, religious and consuetudinary authorities and led by the peers' assembly.

General characters description and diffusion

This is the way the Berber populations in Cabilia, many traditional societies and the communities based on water agreements were ruled. At Ghardaia the town built on the limestone highlands of the Algerian Sahara desert people are forbidden to build in those specific areas that traditional knowledge has designated over time thanks to the experience accumulated by many generations. The assembly of Elders dictates the rules of behaviour, thus helping the youngest to build a house like all the others and to start productive activity. The same rules guaranteed the control of the architectural and urban development in the Sassi of Matera and in the traditional systems of Gravine through the vicinato a place for family meetings. Modern practices of bottom-up participation and planning promoted by international organisms are today re-proposing these ancient habits.

Advantages and sustainability

Societies have survived due to the way in which their sustainable methods of construction, agricultural, and other process vital to life were executed. In this way methods that have been proven through experience to work, have lived on in communities.
