GENERAL DEFINITION OF THE TECHNIQUE
Technique: STONE AND OTHER MATERIALS DAMS

Definition characters description and diffusion

Early humans particiapted in water harvesting.

General characters description and diffusion

The embankment and the areas for water harvesting were built since the first hominids. Hunter-gatherers from the Australian district of Southwestern Victoria carried out a complex netowrk of ditches and embankments crossing a six-hectare area bordering on the mountain slopes on one side and the lands subject to flooding on the other side. It consists of a network of channels conveying water from the mountains, drainage systems, regulating moisture levels in humid areas and a huge maze-like network of ditches, understood to have been a trap for eels.

Advantages and sustainability

Ditches, dams, and other drainage systems were used to collect rainwater and water from other sources in order to carry out processes vital to human life.
