Definition characters description and diffusion
A pit-courtyard acts as an impluvium and provides an open-air sunny space, surrounded by walls, which can be used for agricultural work and preparation of food. Some of these courtyards are used for collecting waste and produce humus, and form gardens carved out of the rock.
General characters description and diffusion
In the development of the Sassi of Matera the original layout of the archaic agro-pastoral structure consisted of caves with an arch formation arranged around a threshing-floor garden, with the water reserves replenished from the plain above, and drained below by the excavated rock or condensed by capturing humidity in the caves. The original irrigated vegetable garden and the threshing-floors became a place for family meetings and for social and community exchanges.
Advantages and sustainability
Garden threshing floors as a result of pit courtyards that act as a space to cultivate, collect sun, water, and humidity, and for the production and collection of humus, are also used as meeting places for social exchanges.
