INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGIES AND SOLUTIONS

Technique: SYSTEMS OF HOUSEHOLD WASTE MANAGEMENT Title: Project of an ecological residential complex in Vasteras (Sweden) Description of the innovative solution The project, conducted in the 90’s 150 km from Stockholm concerns a residential complex of 6 buildings from four to six stories for a total of 70 apartments, constructed by Hsb (Institute for the financing of public buildings). The operation introduces a way of living ecologically in an urban area and constitutes a generalizable experiment with the principle objective of rendering the citizens participants in the natural cycle and in the safeguarding of the environment. The project is based on the construction of an ecological courtyard and on the creation of spaces that allow for an ecological management of waste: from a lavatory based on the separation of solids and liquids according to the antique tradition of Yemen, to the differentiated collection in the kitchen, to the use of compost in the condominium gardens. One part of the water collected from the roofs using gutters is used directly in the homes for domestic uses. The remainder, that which comes from the domestic drains of the homes and that which was collected from the paved surfaces in the yard, is used for irrigation, after being stored and filtered in a cistern. For solid wastes, a system of compost production is foreseen, located underneath the buildings. The project results in an intervention of naturalization on an urban scale, that doesn’t require particular efforts or costs and contributes to the creation of self-sustainable habitable areas inside city settlements.  Advantages and sustainability This project is beneficial because it creates a self-sufficient community of people living in the same complex of apartments that have water collection and storage systems, areas to grow food, and methods for compost of waste to use as fertile soil in green spaces.
