Definition characters description and diffusion

The barrows act as constructions for the condensation and storage of the water.

General characters description and diffusion

They preserve the hydromorphic qualities of the soil by acting as thermoregulators and controlling the humidity both in aird and deeply cold climate conditions. Thus, they help to supply the soil with liquid water that is to be used by the plants and prevent the water from freezing. The so-called solar tombs of the Sahara desert, made out of concentric rings around a barrow, are linked to the ancient water harvesting methods and water cults. An explanation for the mysterious long lines of stones, which sometimes branch out from the ring like long tentacles, thus making the monuments look like a curious space probe, is that they were water collectors. The early shapes of the barrow, which is a structure with pseudo domes having a circular base and an outside mound-shaped profile consisted of hypogeal constructions with a rectangular entry, called dromos, and leading to a pseudo circular dome that is called tholos in Greek. 

Advantages and sustainability

Stone barrows regulate the temperature and the humidity of the soils allowing for a water supply for the soils which is then absorbed by the plants.
